Salmon
Oil
Salmon Oil is comprised of the fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid)
and DHA (decosahexaenoic acid) along with other fatty acids. EPA and
DHA are Omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for the proper
functioning of all tissue and every cell in the body. Omega-3 fatty
acids are contained in fish, such as salmon, mackerel, sardines,
haddock and cod, evening primrose oil, and linseed oil. Salmon oil is
considered by many to be the "king of fish oil".
Why Should I Supplement My Diet With Salmon Oil?
Back in time, humans evolved on a diet that contained small but roughly
equal amounts of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. Then, about 100 years
ago, the food supply began to change. The vegetable oil industry began
to hydrogenate oil, which reduced the oil's omega-3 content. At the
same time, the domestic livestock industry began to use feed grains,
which happen to be rich in omega-6 fatty acids and low in omega-3 fatty
acids. As a result, the American diet now has a ratio of 20:1 omega-6
to omega-3, rather than the 1:1 ratio with which humans evolved. In
other words, our modern American diets are likely to be very unbalanced
with omega-6 fats compared to the omega-3 fats. While the unbalance can
be solved by careful composition of one's diet, the most practical way
for most Americans is to supplement with omega-3 fats. Salmon Oil is a
rich source of omega-3 fats.
Why Don't I Just Take Flaxseed Oil?
Flaxseed oil is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, but it is
also an excellent source of omega-6 fatty acids. Since the typical
American diet is already unbalanced with too much omega-6, it would not
be desirable to try to remedy the imbalance by supplementing with an
oil that contains omega-6 fatty acids.
I Thought I Was Supposed To Avoid Fats?
This is a common misconception as many Americans strive to reduce the
amount of fats in their diets and snacking. Our bodies need fats in
order for us to live. So there are "good fats" and there are "bad
fats". The only fats you should avoid completely are those called trans
fatty acids. Trans fatty acids are those which have been altered
chemically by the addition of hydrogen molecules to a naturally
unsaturated fatty acid oil. The result is to make the oil into a solid
or semi-solid. Trans fatty acids are associated with a number of
unhealthy conditions in our bodies. One should strive to consume the
proper balance and quantity of omega-3 and omega-6 fats.
